Causes of Lip Volume Loss

As we age, our lips tend to become thinner because the soft tissues lose volume and the underlying bone structure changes. Younger people usually have fuller lips that have a noticeable S-shape, a sharp border where the skin meets the lips, and a well-defined cupid’s bow.

The lower third of our face often shows signs of ageing, such as volume loss in the cheeks and a drooping of facial features. This can lead to nasolabial folds, or smile lines, which run from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth. Thinning lips often accompany these changes, including more pronounced nasolabial folds.

Additionally, the ageing process can cause the lips to turn downward, which can give the face a sadder appearance.

About Lip Lift Surgery

A lip lift is a minimally invasive surgical procedure designed to improve the appearance of thin upper lips by reducing drooping skin between the top lip and the septum. During the surgery, the surgeon creates a small incision in the lip area or beneath the nose and removes excess skin to lift and enhance the appearance of the lips and cupid’s bow.

Patients often choose lip lifts to enhance their lip shape or rejuvenate the philtrum region, achieving a youthful look. As a permanent solution to fillers, lip lift surgery can help you achieve the desired aesthetic without the temporary effects of injectable options.

Lip Reduction (Cheiloplasty)

For people with noticeably large lips whether due to their ethnic background, surgical overinflation, or just an imbalance with their facial features lip reduction surgery (cheiloplasty) can be a great option. Lips are key features on the lower part of the face and are essential for expressing emotions and enhancing attractiveness.

In a balanced lip profile, the lips should naturally part slightly, with the lower lip sitting just behind the upper lip. If the lips protrude too much, it can create a disproportionate look. Ideally, the upper lip should cover about two-thirds of the incisors, although this can vary based on ethnicity and gender.

From the side, a harmonious appearance means that the nose, chin, and lips should be in proportion. A well-proportioned face has the lower lip positioned slightly behind an imaginary vertical line drawn through the upper lip, while the chin is positioned even further back.

Lip reduction can be done under local anaesthesia, with or without sedation, and the procedure typically takes about 60 minutes. After surgery, you might notice some swelling that makes your lips look larger at first, but this will go down over a few weeks, revealing the final results.

Benefits of a Lip Lift

Enhanced Lip Volume

The procedure can make the upper lip appear larger and more pronounced, creating a plump effect around the mouth.

    Youthful Appearance

A lip lift can reverse some visible effects of ageing, promoting a more youthful look.

      Defined Cupid's Bow

Ideal for individuals seeking a more defined cupid’s bow without the “duck lip” appearance often associated with fillers.

      Long-Lasting Results

Unlike fillers, which require ongoing treatments, a lip lift offers a permanent solution.

      Frequently Asked Questions

What is the recovery time for a lip lift?

Recovery time can vary, but most patients can expect swelling and bruising to subside within 1-2 weeks. Full results may take several months to settle as the tissues heal.

Will there be visible scarring after the procedure?

Our surgeons use advanced techniques to minimise scarring, typically placing incisions in discreet locations that are not noticeable post-surgery.

Can a lip lift fix asymmetry?

Yes, a lip lift can address asymmetry in the lips, helping to create a more balanced and aesthetically pleasing appearance.

      Is a lip lift painful?

Patients are under anaesthesia during the procedure, so there is no pain. Post-operative discomfort can usually be managed with prescribed pain relief.

How long do the results last?

The results of a lip lift are permanent, offering a lasting enhancement compared to temporary filler options.

What is the difference between lip augmentation and a lip lift?

Lip augmentation typically involves fillers or fat transfer for volume, while a lip lift is a surgical procedure that alters the position and shape of the lips for a more permanent enhancement.
