Blepharoplasty

Eyelid Reduction

The ageing process is often more noticeable around the eyes. As well as wrinkles, sagging skin can affect the upper and lower lids causing the appearance of droopy eyelids and / or eye bags. Eyelid surgery is an effective way to improve these concerns.

The procedure

What’s Involved

During your consultation we’ll examine the eyes and establish the right approach for you. We may treat the upper eyelid, lower eyelid or both. Upper eyelid surgery will involve making a small incision along the eye’s natural crease so that excess skin and tissue can be removed. With lower eyelid surgery, we’ll also look to remove excess skin, but the incision will be made along the eyelash line.

The results of eyelid surgery are long-term, and many patients do not feel the need to repeat surgery later on. Tightening the skin in this area can greatly refresh the appearance of the upper face. In addition to tightening the skin around the eyes, the surgeon may also suggest adding volume to the area below the eye (tear trough). This can be done through a fat transfer procedure and can greatly improve the aesthetics in this region.

Key Considerations

Treatment Duration

Eyelid surgery is also known as blepharoplasty. Depending on your individual circumstances, the procedure may take between 1 and 2 hours to complete. Although this type of surgery can provide a long term outcome, the ageing process will continue to progress. This may mean that the appearance of ageing eyes will return sometime in the future, however, this may not be for several years (and may not be reflective of your actual age).

Type Of Anaesthesia

We may perform this procedure using a local anaesthetic with sedation, or a general anaesthetic. This will be discussed at your consultation and will be decided according to what will be in your best interests. You may also be asked to stop taking certain medications, from 2 weeks before the surgery. And, depending on which anaesthesia we’re going to use, you may also be asked to fast from the night before.

Aftercare Requirements

We will prescribe some eye ointment upon being discharged which you need to bathe the eyes with. Other than this, you’ll need to keep your eyes dry for around 48 hours. To help with any post-treatment discomfort, over-the-counter pain relief can be taken. Dissolvable stitches will be used, and we’ll monitor your healing through a series of follow-up appointments.

Back To Work (Recovery)

Swelling and bruising may take 1-2 weeks to subside, and you may need to take this time off work. Please also be aware that you won’t be able to drive for several days, and strenuous exercise / heavy lifting should be avoided for up to 2 weeks.
