The ageing process is often more noticeable around the eyes. As well as wrinkles, sagging skin can affect the upper and lower lids causing the appearance of droopy eyelids and / or eye bags.

These changes can make you look tired, aged, or stressed. Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is an effective way to improve these concerns, offering a refreshed and more youthful appearance.

Upper Blepharoplasty Surgery

Upper blepharoplasty targets the removal of excess skin and fat from the upper eyelids, often to correct drooping lids that may impair vision or cause a fatigued look. During this procedure, a small incision is made along the eye’s natural crease, allowing for the removal of excess tissue while minimising visible scarring.

This technique ensures precise results that leave you looking rejuvenated without overcorrection.

Patients report feeling more refreshed and alert post-surgery, with results that enhance their natural appearance.

Eyelid Reduction

Lower Blepharoplasty Surgery

Lower blepharoplasty addresses under-eye bags, puffiness, and wrinkles. This surgery involves removing or repositioning fat and tightening the skin, resulting in a smoother, more youthful contour beneath the eyes.

We make incisions along the eyelash line or inside the lower lid (transconjunctival approach), ensuring minimal scarring.

For patients with hollowing or volume loss under the eyes, a fat transfer procedure may be recommended to add volume to the tear trough, further enhancing the aesthetics of this region.

Ethnic
Eyelid Surgery

We understand that eyelid anatomy varies across different ethnicities, and we tailor our surgical techniques to meet the unique needs of each patient.

We specialise in ethnic blepharoplasty, offering personalised procedures for those with Asian, Middle Eastern, Afro-Caribbean, and Mediterranean backgrounds.

Our surgeons respect and enhance the natural character of your features while achieving rejuvenation.

Revision
Blepharoplasty

If you are unsatisfied with the results of a previous eyelid surgery, revision blepharoplasty may be the solution.

This corrective procedure addresses issues such as asymmetry, scarring, or remaining puffiness. Our team specialises in complex cases, carefully revising and restoring the natural anatomy of the eyelid to achieve a more harmonious and balanced result.

Male
Blepharoplasty

Male blepharoplasty is designed to subtly enhance the appearance of the eyes while maintaining masculine features.

Men typically prefer a less pronounced eyelid crease and lower brows, so our surgeons take great care to ensure a natural, refreshed appearance. The procedure tightens and lifts the skin without feminising the face, giving men a more youthful yet distinctly masculine look.

The Process

What is the Process for Upper Blepharoplasty?

The process starts with booking a consultation with one of our experienced Consultant Plastic Surgeons. There might be a bit of a wait for an appointment, depending on the surgeon’s schedule. In the consultation, patients usually have the chance to lock in their preferred surgery slot, making the planning and preparation a bit smoother.

During your consultation, your Consultant Plastic Surgeon will:

  • Assess your eyelids
  • Discuss your aesthetic goals and the results you hope to achieve
  • Provide an honest and professional opinion on your suitability for the procedure

If you’re not suitable for surgery, we’ll let you know straight away. We value honesty and only recommend procedures where we’re confident you’ll achieve the results you’re hoping for.

In terms of suitability, around 73% of patients are considered a good fit for the procedure, while 27% are not. We don’t move forward with surgery unless we’re certain of the outcomes.

The Consultation Process

We don’t offer online consultations for upper eyelid surgery due to the detailed planning and discussions involved. During your in-person consultation, we will examine your eyes to assess suitability for surgery, provide a thorough explanation of the procedure, and discuss your expectations and the potential outcomes.

The Procedure

For upper eyelid surgery, the incisions are made in the natural crease of the eyelid, with slight extensions into the crow’s feet or laughter lines at the corners of the eyes. This helps the surgeon remove any excess skin, fat, and sagging muscle to achieve a more refreshed and youthful look.

Although there may be some scarring initially, it is carefully placed to blend with the natural shape of the eyelid and usually fades noticeably within a few months, often becoming barely visible over time.

Post-Surgery Recovery

Most patients are able to go home on the same day as their surgery. While bruising is common, it usually lasts about a week, and it’s best to wait until the swelling and bruising have gone down before going back to work. Sutures are typically removed after around 7 days, and at that point, you can usually start wearing makeup again.

Following these guidelines helps ensure proper healing and allows for the best possible results after your procedure.

Aftercare, Follow-Up, and Referrals

After your surgery, you’ll receive detailed aftercare instructions to help with your recovery. A follow-up appointment with your surgeon is usually scheduled about a week after surgery to check your healing progress and remove any sutures.

You don’t need a GP referral to have upper eyelid surgery. While some patients choose to get a referral, self-referrals are also welcome, ensuring you can get the treatment you need without delay.

Key Considerations

Treatment Duration

Blepharoplasty typically takes between 1 to 2 hours, depending on the complexity of the procedure. While the results are long-lasting, the natural ageing process will continue, and some signs of ageing may eventually return, although this is often many years after surgery.

Type Of Anaesthesia

The procedure can be performed under local anaesthetic with sedation or general anaesthetic, depending on your individual circumstances. This will be discussed during your consultation. In preparation, you may be asked to stop certain medications two weeks prior to surgery, and fasting may be required if general anaesthesia is used.

Aftercare Requirements

After surgery, we will provide you with an eye ointment and instructions for keeping your eyes dry for the first 48 hours. Over-the-counter pain relief can help manage any discomfort. Dissolvable stitches will be used, and we will schedule follow-up appointments to monitor your healing.

Back To Work (Recovery)

Swelling and bruising may take 1 to 2 weeks to subside, and you may need to take time off work during this period. You should avoid driving for several days and refrain from strenuous exercise or heavy lifting for up to 2 weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the surgery take?

Blepharoplasty typically takes between 1 to 2 hours, depending on whether you are having upper eyelid surgery, lower eyelid surgery, or both. Your surgeon will give you a more specific time estimate based on your individual treatment plan.

What type of anaesthesia is used during blepharoplasty?

The surgery can be performed under local anaesthetic with sedation or general anaesthetic. The best option for you will be discussed during your consultation, based on your health, preferences, and the extent of the surgery.

How long do the results of blepharoplasty last?

The results of blepharoplasty are long-lasting, with many patients enjoying the benefits for several years. Although the natural ageing process will continue, the improvements achieved through surgery are generally maintained over time.

Will there be any visible scarring?

Our surgeons make incisions in the natural creases of the eyelids or along the lash line to minimise visible scarring. Any scars are usually very discreet and fade over time, making them difficult to notice.

Can I combine blepharoplasty with other procedures?

Yes, many patients choose to combine blepharoplasty with other cosmetic procedures, such as a facelift or non-surgical treatments like dermal fillers, to achieve a more comprehensive rejuvenation. During your consultation, your surgeon will discuss the best options for you.

Is blepharoplasty suitable for men?

Yes, blepharoplasty is suitable for both men and women. For male patients, the surgery is tailored to maintain masculine features while subtly refreshing the appearance of the eyes.
