The procedure

What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is designed to address a variety of concerns, including correcting nasal asymmetry, bumps, or improving breathing functionality.

Our surgeons balance surgical precision with artistic vision to achieve natural-looking results. Whether your goal is cosmetic enhancement or addressing a functional issue, rhinoplasty can help:

  • Reshape the nose to better suit your facial proportions
  • Correct a nasal hump or drooping nasal tip
  • Improve breathing issues caused by structural abnormalities
  • Enhance self-confidence with a more harmonious appearance

Our team collaborates with you to create a customised plan, ensuring the final outcome aligns with your aesthetic desires while maintaining your unique facial features.

The procedure

Nose Augmentation

Rhinoplasty is also referred to as a surgical nose job. Its primary aim is to enhance the appearance of the nose, particularly when genetics or trauma has caused it to appear small, large, or misshapen. In cases where breathing difficulties are linked to a misshapen nose, rhinoplasty can also improve function.

The Procedure: What’s Involved?

Our surgeons will recommend the most suitable approach for your rhinoplasty procedure. This may involve either:

  • Closed Rhinoplasty: Utilising incisions made inside the nostrils.
  • Open Rhinoplasty: Making a small incision on the outside of the nose.

To reduce the size of a large nose, we remove some bone and cartilage. For a small nose, we augment it using bone or cartilage from another area of the body, known as grafting. To create a straighter nose, we adjust the existing bone and cartilage structure to achieve a more desirable shape.

Revision Rhinoplasty

Revision rhinoplasty is a procedure for patients who have previously undergone nose surgery but are dissatisfied with the results, either cosmetically or functionally. This surgery can be more complex due to scar tissue or altered anatomy from the initial procedure.

What is Revision Rhinoplasty?

Revision rhinoplasty is tailored to correct problems such as:

  • Dissatisfaction with the appearance of the nose after the initial surgery
  • Breathing difficulties stemming from unsuccessful previous surgeries
  • Structural damage from trauma or earlier surgical interventions

At Leeds Private Hospital, our surgeons specialise in revision rhinoplasty, addressing the unique challenges posed by scar tissue and anatomical changes to restore both functionality and aesthetic harmony.

Ethnic Rhinoplasty

Ethnic rhinoplasty caters to patients from diverse ethnic backgrounds, aiming to enhance the shape and function of the nose while preserving distinctive cultural features. This approach is essential for maintaining the natural beauty of each patient.

What to Expect from Ethnic Rhinoplasty?

Our surgeons consider factors specific to ethnic rhinoplasty, including:

  • Variations in skin thickness among different ethnicities
  • Differences in nasal bridge height and nostril size
  • Unique nasal structures that characterise various ethnic backgrounds

Whether you are of Asian, African, Middle Eastern, or any other descent, our team ensures the final outcome aligns with your cultural identity while achieving your aesthetic goals.

Rhinoplasty

Male Rhinoplasty

Male rhinoplasty focuses on reshaping the nose to enhance masculine features while maintaining a natural appearance.

As cosmetic surgery for men becomes increasingly popular, rhinoplasty is among the top procedures requested to achieve facial balance and boost self-confidence.

What is Different About Male Rhinoplasty?

Male rhinoplasty often involves unique considerations compared to procedures for women. Typically, men desire:

  • A straighter, stronger nasal bridge
  • A more defined nasal tip
  • Maintenance of a broader, more masculine nose shape

Our surgeons are adept at creating subtle changes that enhance masculinity without compromising natural features, whether correcting a sports injury, breathing difficulties, or enhancing appearance.

Key Considerations

Treatment Duration

Rhinoplasty is generally performed in 2 to 3 hours. Your surgeon will discuss specific details during your initial consultation, tailoring the approach based on your individual concerns and expected results.

Type Of Anaesthesia

We use general anaesthetics for rhinoplasty. Once you awaken and the anaesthetic has worn off, painkillers will be prescribed to ease post-surgery discomfort. This medication may be provided before discharge or can be purchased over-the-counter. You will likely need it for several days following surgery.

Aftercare Requirements

The nose will be tender for the next couple of weeks, and healing is most effective when patients avoid touching, blowing, or subjecting the nose to trauma. Follow-up appointments are scheduled for 1 week (for stitch removal and splint adjustment), 1 month, and 6 months post-surgery.

Back To Work (Recovery)

The results of a rhinoplasty procedure are usually permanent and may take several weeks to fully develop, as all bruising and swelling settle. Most patients require 2 weeks off work, with a return to exercise and the gym after 4 weeks.

Rhinoplasty FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the recovery time for rhinoplasty?

Recovery varies, but most patients experience reduced swelling and bruising within 1 to 2 weeks. Full results can take several months as the nose heals and settles into its final shape.

Will there be visible scarring after rhinoplasty?

Our surgeons use advanced techniques to minimise scarring, typically making incisions inside the nostrils or in discrete locations where scars are less noticeable.

Can rhinoplasty fix breathing problems?

Yes, rhinoplasty can address functional issues such as a deviated septum or other structural abnormalities that hinder breathing, often alongside cosmetic enhancements.

Is rhinoplasty painful?

During the procedure, patients are under anaesthesia, so there is no pain. Post-operative discomfort is typically mild and can be managed with prescribed pain relief.

What is the difference between open and closed rhinoplasty?

In open rhinoplasty, a small incision is made across the columella (the tissue between the nostrils) for better visibility and control.

Closed rhinoplasty involves incisions made inside the nostrils, leaving no visible scars. The choice of technique depends on the complexity of the surgery and individual patient needs.
