Intraocular / Lens Implant

Intraocular / lens implants can be used to treat cataracts or certain cases of hyperopia (far-sightedness), myopia (near-sightedness), presbyopia or astigmatism (when the eye is shaped like a rugby ball rather than a football).

The procedure

What’s Involved

The aim of this surgery is to replace the natural lens and improve quality of vision, which may also eliminate the need for glasses in some people. The procedure involves making an incision at the edge of the cornea (lens), for the lens to be fragmented and washed from the eye. The IOL is inserted through the same incision and placed in the takes position as the original lens.

A range of IOLs are available including: monofocal – having a single focal point, trifocal – enabling near and distance vision when looking in any direction and toric – correcting an astigmatism to improve overall vision.

Key Considerations

Treatment Duration

Intraocular / lens implant surgery is a straightforward procedure that can take as little as 15 minutes per eye. We treat each eye independently, and you can choose whether or not to have the surgery on both eyes during the same appointment, if required.

Type Of Anaesthesia

A local anaesthetic is used to perform this surgery which is administered via eye drops. We often combine this with twilight sedation in cases where the patient is particularly anxious.

Aftercare Requirements

The eyes will feel tender after the surgery, and patients should avoid applying make-up and rubbing the eyes for up to 2 weeks. A few days may need to be taken off work, and eye drops will help to reduce the risk of infection and further complications.

Back To Work (Recovery)

The eyes may take between 2 and 4 weeks to settle after surgery, and for the final results to develop fully. Typically, patients may need to consider a few days of downtime while side effects and tenderness improve.
