Flexible Nasal Endoscopy

Flexible nasal endoscopy may be used if you experience difficulty with swallowing, reflux changes or issues with your voice. This is an investigative procedure that can be used to check for lumps or tumours in the neck, throat and vocal cords.

If an individual is experiencing problems with breathing through the nose or sinus issues, flexible nasal endoscopy can assess the internal nasal anatomy. This can provide some very useful information.

The procedure

What’s Involved

Before carrying out the procedure we’ll conduct a consultation where we discuss your concerns and perform an initial examination. The actual treatment involves passing a small telescopic instrument through the nasal passages, continuing to the throat if this is required. The endoscope is fitted with a camera which transmits the images directly onto a screen.

What is discovered in the images will help to make a diagnosis, and identify the cause of your concerns. From here we can recommend the best way to resolve your issues, which may involve further treatment or referral to another specialist.

Key Considerations

Treatment Duration

The treatment itself does not take long – only a few minutes. We may look through one or both of the nasal passages, and the assessment may also require you to say certain words, sentences, make a noise or puff out your cheeks.

Type Of Anaesthesia

We will discuss the use of an anaesthetic at your consultation. Depending on your own level of tolerance, we will decide together if anaesthetic is necessary. Most patients find the treatment to be comfortable, however, others may prefer to use a local anaesthetic which is administered via a nasal spray.

Aftercare Requirements

If a local anaesthetic has been used the inside of the nose and throat will feel numb. This sensation can last for up to 1 hour, and may feel strange or uncomfortable. In this case, you may feel like you are having issues with speaking and breathing. Our specialists will support you before leaving the practice.

Back To Work (Recovery)

Although there is usually no associated downtime with this procedure, patients may wish to remain at home while any after effects are easing (which is usually the case when anaesthetic has been used).
