Nose Augmentation

Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is another name for a surgical nose job. Primarily, the aim of this procedure is to improve the appearance of the nose when genetics or injury / trauma have caused it to look small, large or misshapen. In cases where breathing difficulties are linked to a misshapen nose, rhinoplasty can also be used to improve function.

The procedure

What’s Involved

Our surgeons will recommend the best approach to this procedure, performing either a closed rhinoplasty (using incisions inside the nostrils) or an open rhinoplasty (making an incision on the outside of the nose). To reduce the size of a large nose, we remove some of the bone and cartilage. To augment a small nose (make it larger) we build up the nose using bone or cartilage from another area of the body (known as grafting). When looking to produce a straighter nose, we adjust the way the bone and cartilage is currently structured to create a more desirable shape.

Key Considerations

Treatment Duration

Rhinoplasty is generally performed in 2 to 3 hours. Your surgeon will discuss the specific details of the procedure at your initial consultation, basing their approach on your individual concerns and expected results.

Type Of Anaesthesia

At Leeds Private Hospital we use a general anaesthetic to carry out a rhinoplasty procedure. Once you’re awake and the anaesthetic has worn off, you’ll need to take pain killers to help ease post-surgery discomfort. This may be prescribed before you’re discharged, or can be bought over-the-counter. You are likely to need this medication for several days after surgery.

Aftercare Requirements

The nose will feel very tender for the next couple of weeks, and healing is effective when patient’s avoid touching, blowing and knocks to the nose. Follow up appointments are arranged at 1 week (when any stitches and / or the splint may be removed), 1 month and 6 months.

Back To Work (Recovery)

The results of a rhinoplasty procedure are usually permanent, and may take several weeks to fully develop – when all bruising and swelling has settled. Most patients need to take 2 weeks off work, resuming exercise and going to the gym after 4 weeks.
