What’s Involved

A range of techniques are taken into account when considering how to perform this procedure. The main part of the surgery involves making an incision that is hidden along the hairline. Excess forehead skin is trimmed away and the hairline is pulled down to meet the incision. We may look to also perform a brow lift (which raises the eyebrows) at the same time if this is appropriate.

Key Considerations

Treatment Duration

The time it takes to complete a forehead reduction can vary from person to person, depending on the techniques that are involved. Typically, this procedure can take between 1.5 and 2 hours.

Type Of Anaesthesia

We typically use a general anaesthetic when undertaking the forehead reduction, however, in some cases we can use a local anaesthetic with sedation. The type of anaesthetic we’ll use will be discussed and decided at your consultation.

Aftercare Requirements

You may need to wear a dressing or supportive bandage for a few days. Your first follow-up appointment will be 1 week after your surgery, when we may remove any stitches. Keeping the incisions clean and dry will help them to heal effectively, and we advise to avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for up to 4 weeks.

Back To Work (Recovery)

You may be able to return to work after 1 or 2 weeks. Moderate pain or discomfort may be experienced for around 5 days which can be managed with simple over-the-counter pain relief. A full recovery is expected at around 3 weeks when the final result will also have developed. The advantage of a surgical forehead reduction in comparison to hair transplant grafting is the results are immediate, whereas with a hair transplant, the outcome can take up to 12 months to develop post-procedure.
