Laser Eye Surgery

Laser eye surgery is a corrective procedure that can be used to treat: long-sightedness (hyperopia), short-sightedness (myopia) and astigmatism. The ideal patient is over 18 years of age, and their prescription will be stable (stayed the same for a minimum of 2 years).

The procedure

What’s Involved

Although this procedure is surgical it is considered to be less invasive than other forms of eye surgery. Powerful light beams are delivered to the clear surface on the front of the eye, known as the cornea. A flap is created whereby the laser can then reshape the lens so that light entering the eye will bend correctly when focusing on the retina.

Laser eye surgery can greatly improve clarity of vision, and may mean that there is no need to continue wearing glasses (although there is no guarantee). This procedure is of particular benefit to those who have a high prescription, and results can last for up to 10 years.

Key Considerations

Treatment Duration

The laser eye surgery procedure is fairly straightforward and usually only takes 30 minutes to complete, per eye. Each patient is treated individually and we’ll ensure that we adapt our process to meet the needs of the patient, and address each eye independently.

Type Of Anaesthesia

We administer a local anaesthetic that comes in the form of a solution that’s applied as eye drops. A sedative can also be administered intravenously if the patient feels overly worried or stressed about the procedure.

Aftercare Requirements

A personalised treatment plan will include information about aftercare. To manage mild discomfort and sensitivity to light, patients can wear non-prescription sunglasses for 1-3 days. A follow-up appointment will be arranged to ensure recovery is progressing normally.

Back To Work (Recovery)

The final outcome is likely to have developed within 5-10 days, depending on the specific approach. Most patients are able to return to work and driving after 3 days.
